An LDS Perspective on Socialism
All political and economic systems facilitate the redistribution of wealth including capitalism, communism and socialism; however the favored method of redistribution vary from system to system. Capitalism relies primarily on the more or less voluntary purchase of sale of goods and services, whereas communism and socialism typically use involuntary methods such as taxation and nationalization of property.
The first concerns a hippie couple who were walking down the street. They both had long hair and were dressed in typical hippie attire, complete with beads, sandals, and headbands. The fellow said to the girl: “I’m going over and pick up my unemployment check. Then I’ll drop in at the university to see what’s holding up my check for my federal education grant. After that I’ll pick up our food stamps. Meanwhile, you go over to the free clinic and check your tests, pick up my new glasses at the city health center, then go to the welfare department and apply for another increase on our eligibility limit.

Bird Feeders
Somone at work sent this to me. I think it's pretty funny and makes a good point.
******************************************
I bought a bird feeder. I hung it on my back porch and filled it with seed. What a beauty of a bird feeder it is, as I filled it lovingly with seed. Within a week we had hundreds of birds taking advantage of the continuous flow of free and easily accessible food.
But then the birds started building nests in the boards of the patio, above the table, and next to the barbecue.
Then came the poop. It was everywhere: on the patio tile, the chairs, the table... everywhere!
Then some of the birds turned mean. They would dive bomb me and try to peck me even though I had fed them out of my own pocket.
And others birds were boisterous and loud. They sat on the feeder and squawked and screamed at all hours of the day and night and demanded that I fill it when it got low on food.
After a while, I couldn't even sit on my own back porch anymore. So I took down the bird feeder and in three days the birds were gone. I cleaned up their mess and took down the many nests they had built all over the patio.
Soon, the back yard was like it used to be .. quiet, serene and no one demanding their rights to a free meal.
Now let's see .
Our government gives out free food, subsidized housing, free medical care, and free education and allows anyone born here to be an automatic citizen.
Just my opinion, but maybe it's time for the government to take down the bird feeder. If you agree, pass it on; if not, continue cleaning up the poop!

Is the right CHANGE coming?
But What About The Needy? On the surface this may sound heartless and insensitive to the needs of those less fortunate individuals who are found in any society, no matter how affluent. "What about the lame, the sick and the destitute? Is an often-voice question. Most other countries in the world have attempted to use the power of government to meet this need. Yet, in every case, the improvement has been marginal at best and has resulted in the long run creating more misery, more poverty, and certainly less freedom than when government first stepped in. As Henry Grady Weaver wrote, in his excellent book, THE MAINSPRING OF HUMAN PROGRESS:
"Most of the major ills of the world have been caused by well-meaning people who ignored the principle of individual freedom, except as applied to themselves, and who were obsessed with fanatical zeal to improve the lot of mankind-in-the-mass through some pet formula of their own....THE HARM DONE BE ORDINARY CRIMINALS, MURDERES, GANGSTERS, AND THIEVES IS NEGLIGIBLE IN COMPARISON WITH THE AGONY INFLICTED UPON HUMAN BEINGS BY THE PROFESSIONAL 'DO-GOODERS', who attempt to set themselves up as gods on earth and who would ruthlessly force their views on all others - with the abiding assurance that the end justifies the means." (p. 40-1; P.P.N.S., p. 313)The Better Way
By comparison, America traditionally has followed Jefferson's advice of relying on individual action and charity. The result is that the United States has fewer cases of genuine hardship per capita than any other country in the entire world or throughout all history. Even during the depression of the 1930's, Americans ate and lived better than most people in other countries do today.
What Is Wrong With A "Little" Socialism?
In reply to the argument that a little bit of socialism is good so long as it doesn't go too far, it is tempting to say that, in like fashion, just a little bit of theft or a little bit of cancer is all right, too! History proves that the growth of the welfare state is difficult to check before it comes to its full flower of dictatorship. But let us hope that this time around, the trend can be reversed. If not then we will see the inevitability of complete socialism, probably within our lifetime.
Three Reasons Americans Need Not Fall For Socialist Deceptions
Three factors may make a difference. First, there is sufficient historical knowledge of the failures of socialism and of the past mistakes of previous civilizations. Secondly, there are modern means of rapid communications to transmit these lessons of history to a large literate population. And thirdly, there is a growing number of dedicated men and women who, at great personal sacrifice, are actively working to promote a wider appreciation of these concepted men and women who, at great personal sacrifice, are actively working to promote a wider appreciation of these concepts. The timely joining together of these three factors may make it entirely possible for us to reverse the trend.
How Can Present Socialistic Trends Be Reversed?
This brings up the next question: How is it possible to cut out the various welfare-state features of our government which have already fastened themselves like cancer cells onto the body politic? Isn't drastic surgery already necessary, and can it be performed without endangering the patient? In answer, it is obvious that drastic measures ARE called for. No half-way or compromise actions will suffice. Like all surgery, it will not be without discomfort and perhaps even some scar tissue for a long time to come. But it must be done if the patient is to be saved, and it can be done without undue risk.
Obviously, not all welfare-state programs currently in force can be dropped simultaneously without causing tremendous economic and social upheaval. To try to do so would be like finding oneself at the controls of a hijacked airplane and attempting to return it by simply cutting off the engines in flight. It must be flown back, flown back, lowered in altitude, gradually reduced in speed and brought in for a smooth landing. Translated into practical terms, this means that the first step toward restoring the limited concept of government should be to freeze all welfare-state programs at their present level, making sure that no new ones are added. The next step would be to allow all present programs to run out their term with absolutely no renewal. The third step would involve the gradual phasing-out of those programs which are indefinite in their term. In my opinion, the bulk of the transition could be accomplished within a ten-year period and virtually completed within twenty years. Congress would serve as the initiator of this phase-out program, and the President would act as the executive in accordance with traditional constitutional procedures.

The Singing Revolution will be in Tempe - 10/10 through 10/14
I just received the following email regarding the documentary "The Singing Revolution". It's going to be in Tempe October 10th through the 14th.
I realize most people don't have the sentimental connection to Estonia that I do, but regardless, the story and history make it a great documentary. Within the next few weeks, the DVD is coming out as well.
Dear TSR Friends,
The Singing Revolution is still in theaters. No one anticipated this extensive of a theatrical run! We have played in over 120 theaters, and there are still many more cities opening in October & November.
We write to THANK all of you -- those who called the theaters, emailed asking how they could get it to their city, handed out the postcards and emailed friends across North America to let people know of the various openings. This is what drove people to the theaters on opening weekend, got the film held over for multiple weeks in many cities, and encouraged the next theater to book the film.
So over 100,000 people have seen the film thus far. But there are millions more to reach! It's now time to move to the next stage of sharing this story as far and wide as possible.
Within two weeks, the DVD of The Singing Revolution will be available through the film's website. And we're even more excited about the Educational 3 DVD set and Collector's Edition that's been created. With over 4 hours of additional interview segments, 30 historical documents, 7 newsreels, 15 maps, and teacher's guide, we hope to share an even more in-depth experience with young and old alike.
The companion book and various Estonian music CDs will be available on the website as well.
Even with the DVD coming out soon, many theaters are still motivated to share The Singing Revolution in their communities, and we of course feel it is truly suited for the big screen (300,000 people singing illegal songs in a field needs to be seen & heard in a theater!)
So please continue to support the openings coming in the next month (see list below). We'll be sure to send an email as soon as the DVDs, CDs and book are available on the
website. We're often asked what is it about the film that people are drawn to, and we're very clear the film has little to do with it. It is the power of this story, and the strength and intelligence of the people who fought the Singing Revolution.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your help in sharing this story.
